“DESIGN HERO” POSTER
Dimensions
OVERVIEW
The first step of a months-long project aimed at presenting and transforming the work of an iconic designer (the titular “Design Hero”). Later, the project will include a 16-page booklet, mobile-oriented web design, and more. Stay tuned!
I chose to study German graphic designer Gunter Rambow, who has been creating imaginative, striking, politically charged posters for over six decades. Rambow’s work has a very distinctive look - large, centered images and pops of red against a pitch-black background are hallmarks of his style - so I set out to twist that formula while keeping intact the essential elements that make his posters uniquely memorable.
To bring Rambow’s confrontational vision into the piece, the poster was printed, punched with holes, and images of his work were superimposed beneath the surface. The typesetting of his name represents the breadth and variety of work he has created and the stylistic throughlines that connect each piece. The lingering roughness of the paper and visible texture harken back to Rambow’s long history of physical image manipulation.
